What does this c clip do in my high pivot gear? When I force it inside the rim of the hear it does not seem to do anything. Is it just supposed to be flush against the rim to act as a washer against the frame?

What does this c clip do in my high pivot gear? When I force it inside the rim of the hear it does not seem to do anything. Is it just supposed to be flush against the rim to act as a washer against the frame?

That’s a Circlip. It is used to hold something inside the gear. My guess is it holds the outer race of a bearing and the inner race interfaces with the frame. It should not be contacting the frame.
