The paint on my Trek 750 has seen better days. It looks like the previous owner had a chain or something similar around the top tube that’s worn through the clear top coat but not quite got to the blue paint underneath.
I’d love to restore this and put another top coat of clear on, but I’m mindful that if I just went ahead and did that it would reproduce the bumps that are there now.
Any advice on approaching this? Anything at all. Products, techniques, things to watch out for. I’ve never repainted a bike in any way.
My current thoughts are to get some cut and polish and use a something relatively solid (like a thin rag stretched over a wooden block) to cut the varnish down a bit further, then clear coat, then probably do that again over and over until it smooths out.

I would either live with it, or dismantle and strip it back to bare metal for a respray.
I’m yet to see a clear coat “touch up” that didn’t look worse than the original wear. Not saying it’s impossible to touch up and be happy, just unlikely.
I would just polish it up. Super cool Multitrack. I love these things.
Keep it like that and ride it with vintage pride.
These older bikes NEED this used look to be appropriated, all bikes look clean. these bikes look great with that older vintage look.
