So I have a bike with a microshift advent drivetrain. It's great, except the shifter doesn't match the rest of the aesthetic of the bike.

I was wondering if it's possible to switch that shifter out for something like this? I know these are two individual shifters, and the advent is like one unit, but the description says "You could use them as double lever shifter if you attach pedastals as well." And I have no idea what that means… is there like a part where you can mount these together like that advent shifter?

  1. I think maybe they’re saying you can attach the two levers to one post essentially. These are friction shifters so really doesn’t matter what your derailleur it will work as long as the cable throw is sufficient.

  2. I’m not seeing these on the Rivendell website, are you able to post a link? It looks like Rivendell sell the lever and mount separately. I see no mention of pedestals on their website unfortunately.

You’d be going from indexed shifting (one click to change one gear up/down) to friction shifting, where you’re freely adjusting the derailleur without any guidance except for the high and low limits of the entire gear range.

I assume this is poorly auto-translated, or written by someone with English as a second languages.

Advent X is a 1×10 drivetrain with an indexed 10 speed drivetrain. These two shifters are friction, copies of of the classic Suntour Power Ratchet shifters. If you want to use it with Microshift, it might work (some modern mountain drivetrains struggle with friction, counterintuitive as that may seem). You will use one of the shifters and have one left over.

As an aside, I don’t believe that these are a Rivendell item. I think this is Soma/American Cyclery/IRD and Dia-Compe. IIRC Riv sold them for a while, but now they have their “Silver” lever, which is probably the same thing with different branding (or similar enough), but is not Dia-Compe.

  5. for some reason they don’t show it but i think they mean you can stack them but it seems like bluelug are the only people that mention this so reach out to them

before you get these are your advent shifters friction? these are not indexed. do you shift both the front and rear with a single advent shifter? because thats what would happen if you double stacked these

  6. I take it to mean that you can combine two of these levers so you can shift both derailleurs with the same hand, not that you can mount one as an additional, redundant shifter to an integrated brake/shifter combo.

You might be able to do that, but if aesthetics are your principal concern, it would seem an odd choice.

  7. From the OP I’m assuming there is just a little confusion about friction shifting vs modern shifters where one lever shifts up and the other shifts down.

For any 1x drivetrain, only *one* of these shifters is necessary. You push it one way to increase cable tension (downshift) and pull back the other way to reduce cable tension (upshift).

Some friction shifters are micro-indexed and will click when shifted, but it’s not necessarily one click per shift like a modern shifter.

Friction shifting generally isn’t “indexed” at all like modern shifters are, so you have to feel your way into each gear. It’s a very simple and intuitive way to shift, but it’s not fast. With a little practice, it becomes easier to get a handle on. Most derailleurs will work with friction shifters.
