Hello all i have recently inherited a bike from someone who was like a father to me and i have no idea how to fix this, when i move the bike backwards this thing in the middle at the pedal moves diagonally and then rubs against the wheel until pulled bakc into place, i tried adjusting the high and low screws (google called them that) and it didnt work but maybe im doing it wrong 😅 plz be nice to me i know this post sounds stupid but its essential that i fix this bike as i feel like i will be letting him down if i dont

  1. You should adjust the position of the derailleur itself and not fine tune the screws. Look at a video on how to mount a derailleur from scratch and go from there.

    The front deraileur spun on the seat tube, either is loose or needs shimmed with an old innertube or something if it’s already tight but spins easily.

    The outside of the deraileur should line up with the large gear (chainring), currently it’s turned so the back side is way too far inward.

    Front derailleur is misaligned, its rectangular frame (through which the chain is passing) must be parallel to the chain. So first you adjust this, minding the height on the seat tube, and then go fiddling with the screws (they are for fine tuning).
