Just got this new stem (wethepeople index).
Got it in oilslick because it was 35 bucks cheaper then black or silver.

But I wont run a oilslick stem xD (aint my style)

When I unpacked it, I saw on a small corner the color was rubbed off. Wich in this case is a + for me lol.

I rubbed with just a paper towel and got some oilslick off.

Now I tried alcohol like desinfection and also an aceton free nail polish remover and nothing removed it faster.

Any tipps or tricks to get oilslick off?

Of course sanding would work, but I dont really have the tools to repolish.

My original plan was sanding, primer and paint (did it before, worked great) but of course just rubbing the paint off would be eaiser.

Safe yourself the "dont spray paint" or "powder coat it comments. I dont have access to powder coating.
I got some aceton and stuff like that at home.

It should just be an anodize. Google how to remove anodize from aluminum. I’ve had success using heavy duty oven cleaner, but make sure you take precautions.

EDIT: If you have a plating facility near you (usually located near car painting places and machine shops), they’d probably strip it for you for $10 or less, depending on who’s working that day and what kind of mood they’re in.

EDIT EDIT: Another bonus for taking the stem to a plating shop/anodizing shop is that they’d be able to color it for you for a pretty reasonable price, if you wanted.

Just did the oven cleaner trick to a black stem I had. It works really well, but maybe too well. it caused some unwanted corrosion to the aluminum. Just cosmetic damage, so no biggie. But just keep an eye out if you go that route

  3. Find a powder coating business near you. They will blast it and paint it any color in any finish you want.

  4. If you have an angle grinder get a flappy disk then some scouring disks take that top layer of steel off and then get a polish and sealer that will protect it from weather.

  5. Break fluid shits removes any kind of paint or what ever you wanna remove but it’s a process get some break fluid and submerge the stem for a few hours the. Wipe it down

caustic soda, i think any type, it removes the anodize and leaves raw aluminium

Oven cleaner and a ziplock bag leave it for a few minutes then start rubbing it from the outside will just slide right off
