Hey, guys
So bought a used bike (SuperCaliber 9.7 Gen1), but when testing it out on XCO track noticed that every-time when I land a harsher bump my seatpost just collapses down. Afterwards looked under seatpost lock and noticed these cracks on frame.

As I understand, because these cracks it makes lock uneven when You lock it and it doesn't have the holding power as it should have. So it just gives out when ever there is bigger bumps

Any ideas how and if this can be fixed?

Solution: At end I understand from most of you guys, that I need to add a carbon paste + recheck torque of what I lock the seatpost

  1. I don’t see any cracks, are you referring to the two slotted lines… Theses are normal and needed for compression.

Have you torqued to spec? Have you properly cleaned both surfaces and used carbon grip paste?

If you are thinking about fixing it yourself, you can’t. On the other hand you can try to find someone who does this for a living, and they will probably fix it.

  3. Carbon paste is how you fix it. The slots are there so it doesn’t actually crack when you torque the clamp to hold the post.

Get a tube of carbon paste (or bring a little plastic container and nicely ask your LBS for a little dab of it) rub it around the inside of the seat tube and/or outside of your seat post roughly where it’ll be clamped at. Slide the post in, torque the clamp to spec, wipe any remaining residue away.

  4. I don’t see cracks. I also believe that bike didn’t come with a carbon seatpost originally. I’m willing to bet there is no fiber grip/assembly paste. Add the paste and torque to spec and I bet you’re good to go. – It may also be the seatpost itself. That looks like the cheap Amazon carbon seatpost. I believe there have been diameter issues with many cheaper carbon fiber seatposts.

Are you referring to the damage to the paint/clearcoat? You could just add some nail polish and sand it all smooth once dry. To keep the post from slipping apply some carbon paste and make sure not to over tighten the collar. If there are cracks in the carbon then you will need to get the frame repaired or get a new frame.
