The jack screws were handc cranked beneath the buildings, and each one was turned at exactly the same time, raising the building with people still inside. Wooden supports were stacked beneath until it reached the new higher street level, and brand new foundations were constructed as the building remained suspended. You see, the city was originally built on a swamp, meaning the streets were constantly flooded, and this caused disease to spread around the city. So, they raised the buildings away from the swamp, and Chicago still sits on those foundations to this day.

  1. It's ironic that Washington DC is called 'The Swamp' because it is built on an actual swamp that neither Maryland or Virginia wanted to claim. Parts of it are subject to subsidence that is measured annually.

  2. This is why Chicago has the elevated ("EL") trains and no subway. Houston and other cities have a similar issue. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's students determined the way to "float" foundations for tall buildings without going to bedrock that permitted Chicago to have the skyline it has today. The sway on upper floors from strong winds is another matter of course …
