Crossing some of England’s most beautiful countryside, the Kennet and Avon Canal links England’s canals from the River Thames at Reading to the Bristol Channel. The path is one of Britain’s most popular long-distance, waterside cycling and walking routes.

The route of the Kennet and Avon Canal takes you from the Thames at Reading through some of the nation’s best loved landscapes, including West Berkshire – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and Thatcham, Hungerford, and Pewsey.

It includes the dramatic Caen Hill Locks at Devizes and the southern tip of the rolling Cotswolds, taking you past the stunning aqueducts at Dundas and Avoncliff. Other highlights include the delightful Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre, Caen Hill Locks, Claverton Pumping Station, and numerous pretty canal side villages, including Bradford-on-Avon.

Along the way to Bath, most of the route follows a towpath, making for an easy, relaxed walk or cycle.

Heat. Heat. [Music] Yeeha! Hey! [Music] Wow! Yeah. So, it’s nice to have a house connect. Actually, don’t need to go to B. You’re having a be tonight. Look how very close you are on the road. Hello. So, that’s the toll to tall point. That’s where me and Daniel get lost. So, instead of like turning right, it went straight up. But it’s easy to go. Yes. There’s no No, no, no. [Music] This is the B Hampton Mill. This is a restaurant and as we know earlier, Daniel made a mistake. Yes, made a mistake. Well, to refer to me, there’s no sign on that one. Yeah, that’s the hotel. And then we thought that this is the um the place that we booked for our because it’s called I saw the mill. I know. Me too. Both of us are dumb. And when I looked on Google before we came, I thought it was the next place down from the um the George, but it’s actually the second place down. The food is very good in there. Yes. It’s not a mistake because um I enjoy the food. They’re very lovely. Oh, look. Do you know what the D is? That is Deutsland. There’s a Deutsland, Germany. There’s a car in our uh in the car park where they’re German as well. [Music] [Music] We just missed the train. [Music] Church of England. There’s the steps and that goes up to the canal. [Music] kind of there’s not proper old stone [Music] crushing. [Music] God, so lovely and warm, is it? Yes. I’m glad we walk now then go for our cycling. Well, I didn’t feel like sweaty. So, look at all flowers. Amazing. Yeah, I know. Wow. Yes. I like to have a garden like this. Hey, got some SW young ones. [Music] [Music] This one is faster swimmers. [Music] I think they are. Wait for getting bread. No bread. But I can give Daniel. He’s full of fats. We don’t want you there. The little green one down there. Yeah, that small one is I think it’s easy. [Music] My dad used to do the uh piloting and my mom would be the one who was opening the locks. [Music] But like the sign says down there, you’re not you’re not meant to be staying. You’re allowed to stay at that one place there for 2 days. Then you got to move otherwise you get charged £25 a day, which I think is still a very good price. Looked after, can’t you? Yes. [Music] I don’t know what’s going on with those beehives. They abandoned this one. It’s two two of them. It looks very rough, isn’t it? [Music] Yeah, we’re heading towards Bath between Bathampton and Bath. Still going along the Kennet A Canal. Yeah. Beautiful summer evening. [Music] It’s still only 6:00 though. It’s not late. [Music] So, this is a nice surprise with me and Daniel realized that there’s a lovely path to walk along in here. Well, that’s thanks to the guy who takes the money at the toll booth. Yes. On the bridge. Cuz the uh path I was going to walk along, I said, “Where where does that go?” He goes, “Nowhere. [Music] I suppose it’s a very nice flat fence holiday place to live in a canal boat. Yeah, you have to be very organized. Yeah, it’s a hard work. But then you haven’t got to paying expensive rent or mortgage. [Music] road which used to used to drive across to go back up to the A4 in the lries but they put an 18 ton restriction on it now. So, but if we’d what we to get to our place driving, we could have either done the the uh toll bridge what we did or we could have carried on down the air cross there, but all it means is an extra driving. I’ve seen watching I was watching YouTube videos before about people living on canal boats. Yeah, it’s actually a good lifesty. [Music] Yeah, we can see some buildings now. Yeah. [Music] Can see the city center of B. Huh. So that’s a way down into the town. Well, obviously I think we should be going further. I don’t know. I think so. Do you think? [Music] I think so. Yeah. [Music] It’s more that way still train. [Music] This is a nice thing. You want to be walking along a normal road? No. Even though the houses are quite nice with the old ones. Yeah. Prefer here. This is like so wide and so well. [Music] I think there’s no space. How big that one is huge. That would have been originally used for transporting stuff. That’s why it’s so big. Like probably was transporting coal or finished goods. Big one. That’s massive. Mhm. That’s the biggest. You have loads of room to live on. That’s the biggest canal we’ve seen. Yeah. They got room to stand up properly and everything. Yeah. That’d be dead expensive. That would Ah, see that’s the under town center now. Oh, I guess so. We are very close to the city center. Yeah. [Music] [Music] When we were little, we used to play on my way lines. Now you get a big bang. [Music] [Music] I probably driven this million times. 100. [Music] It’s nice. Sometimes we go on foot because you discover a lot of things cuz we’ve driven or passed this side of the road. We never know that there’s a that that side is there’s a lovely place to walk and you need a belt. No, I feel that was that something. [Music]
