For the love of my knees, I finally switched from 44×10-44 xplr to 44×10-52 eagle my apex eagle derailleur was waiting for so long.

What can I say? It‘s just like I had imagined. The jump from the 42nd to the 52nd cog is noticeable but actually not that annoying as I‘d thought. Most of the time, I‘ll stay in that second easiest gear anyways and only switch to the large ring as a last resort when absolutely necessary.

My bike was originally equipped with a 40×11-44 set-up providing a similar climbing gear. Later, I switched to XDR 10-44 for a faster top speed but was especially bothered that I was abusing the four smallest cogs on the flats all the time, so I increased the chainring to 44T.

Although it might feel as going full circle, the 44T chainring provides a healthy chain line on the flats and reasonable top speed on paved descents. Meanwhile, climbing has become less straining again – extremely important in an area where it feels as if you’re constantly climbing.

  1. The mullet slaps! I have a similar setup (Force ASX/X01/ 10-52x46T)on my Topstone C4, love it.

  2. Hey, what a beautiful bike! That’s the thing with 1x set up. You always over spin in flats or if you changed a chainring for a bigger one you need bigger cog in the back. I’ve been there. But after changing to 2x set up all that problem is gone.

  3. Looking good. Chef’s kiss to the photo setup btw, valve stems / cranks oriented perfectly, editing out the bike stand, etc.
