So since a little before July I’ve been running this 12-25t cassette on my 9speed sora group set as a way to get tighter spacing since I’ve been dabbling in crit racing this year.

After a race I was prepping my bike for the next day and noticed that when I have the 12-25t cassette on my Giant contend AR3, since the 12 tooth cog is a larger diameter than the usual 11 tooth one, it sits super close to the weld on the inside of the drop out.

However, despite some scratches on the dropout weld that were a bit spooky they seem artificial and likely the result of the frame flexing I suppose under heavy load. Granted I only weight like 64kg. But with the chain off the bike, the cassette and wheel both spin freely. So it seems to barely clear it on the bottom of the drop out by a mil or 2.

Is that okay to ride on? I’ve been smashing it on this cassette but wanted to get some other opinions. Either way I ordered a 9 speed 11-25t HG Shimano cassette off Amazon that’s coming tomorrow. So if it’s bad I’ll only ride it tomorrow AM one last time for the spicy group ride.

  1. Guessing it’s fine, especially if you can think back to a day where the chain fell off the big sprocket. Probably happened while cleaning or removing the wheel. I’m just guessing that scratch did not come from riding.
