Hey I want to bike from Munich-Thessaloniki in Mid-End October, this is my second big tour. Last year I did a 4200km tour from Germany-NorthCape. I know that it's already cold and the year comes to an end but I do not want to end this year without a bikepacking adventure. And as I always dreamt of cycling the Balkans I thought that this might be a good idea. I need some help about the route is there any better sections which I can take? I want to cycle south because of good and warm weather but I also want to see big mountains and prepared for cold sections. Which clothing should I take? Should I be worried about bears? I need some general help about my decisions and this adventure 🙂

  1. Bears are only a bit of a thing in North Croatia. You’ll be fine, don’t sleep with food in your tent if wild camping. Have you thought about Bosnia? You can cross from Croatia and go to the Una national park and the waterfalls and maybe cross back to Croatia later if you don’t want to do Mostar etc. I would check your roads in Montenegro, some of them are basically motorways with little alternative depending where you are. That segment of North Albania into Ohrid is stunning.

  2. GroĂźglockner HochalpenstraĂźe closes in the beginning of november, earlier if there is snow.
Wurzenpass (Villach into Slovenia) is really steep with plenty of traffic. The cycle path to Tarvis and then over to Krankska Gora is much essier, Tarvis – Predil (maybe Mangart) – Bovec is very nice, but you end up somewhere different, and to go to Ljubljana you have to cross Vršic pass (which is very beautiful too).
