I’ve spent several months watching for a used Canyon Grizl or Cannondale Topstone 3. The attached photo shows the upgrades made to a Topstone 4, and the seller is asking $900. I don’t know enough about the components to make an educated comparison. Do these upgrades get the Topstone 4 close to Topstone 3 from a performance standpoint? Or should I hold out for a 3 (or a Grizl)?

  1. Depending on the year a Topstone 3 or 4 could have Shimano 2x drivetrains or Microshift 1x drivetrain. This SRAM drivetrain they have swapped in is mostly better than any of those options, the big one being it has hydraulic brakes, but also it is 11 speed rear derailleur more than any stock Topstone 3. The downside is it has not the best total gear range, less than the Microshift 1×10 even. So if you are in a hilly area you may have to put a small from chainring on and then have a limited top speed. The rear wheel upgrade is nice too and there is nothing else of note on the list. I would definitely be interested and think for a lot of people not needing the best gear range it’s better than a Topstone 3.
