Hey all, i wanted to begin using my dad‘s old mtb to try mountainbiking, he hasn‘t ridden it in years so there also hasn‘t been any maintenance. Coming from road and gravel riding, i just gave it a clean and tried to freshen up the drivetrain, as i do with my other bikes. Is there anything i need to pay special attention to? What could i do/upgrade to make it feel like a more modern mtb?
The bike is a 2011(?) Price Comp 26 i believe, though wasn‘t really able to find anything on it, so i‘m not 100% sure what the intended purpose for it was originally.

You *might* pay extra attention to the fork. But it’s probably cheaper to send it for a full service than buy the equipment yourself – on the other hand: it feels like 90% do not care about service intervals for forks and just ride them.
That being said: I see you have a special pair of combined shifters/brake levers. I have/tried on pair of those, too and had some difficulties while shifting. I read that you need some good, slick housing for these.
Otherwise, like you said: just treat it like your other bikes – and have fun!
Woah a Manitou Splice fork! That takes me back lmao. You can try pumping the fork up and seeing if it still works but likely it should be replaced. Also it looks like it has combo shifter/brake levers and those are awful and caused a lot of crashes back in the day. I would replace them with inexpensive shifters and a set of mt200 shimano hydraulic brakes. Other than that it should be a sweet ride!
Check the thickness of brake pads and rotors. With the time, if you see some issues with the brakes, you may want to bleed them. Service for the fork comes in question, but here it costs a couple of 100s
No big upgrades, save money for the modern bike.
