I got inspired from this sub to build my own bike. I found an old Bianchi Project 3 in pretty rough shape, so tore it down, and built it up from the frame with some old and new parts. The frame itself is really nice Tange infinity double-butted cromo. I'm including some details below for those who might find one of these frames.

Drivetrain:

  • I found a replacement triple Sugino crankset (24-36-46) and installed a new Tange alloy bottom bracket with spindle length of 127mm. Even with that spindle length, the smallest chain ring is very close to the frame, but clears fine.
  • Rear is a Shimano 8-speed cassette 11-32
  • Kept the original Exage derailers

Wheels:

  • I had some new wheels built by Bicycle Wheel Warehouse – they have a pretty good deal on Sun Rhyno lite 700C rims with generic Shimano hubs
  • Tires are Schwalbe G-one Allround 700×45. Actual measurement is only 41mm unfortunately. I was hoping for 45-47 range.

Cockpit:

  • I "downgraded" to some old Deore 6-speed friction shift levers
  • Brake levers are new Tektro FL540
  • Took some handlebars and grips from an '80s Raleigh mountain bike
  • Splurged on the Nitto stem and brake cable holder

Other:

  • Brakes are new Shimano altus cantis – really responsive braking!
  • Seatpost is a generic alloy 26.4mm post
  • Saddle is one from the parts bin for now.
