Have been hearing some creaking when I was putting pressure through my pedals. Initially I thought it was the pedal or crank but thought I would check some other things too. Seems this has happened recently or worsened significantly recently (for me to hear creaking so distinctly).
It certainly feels like one side of the line is more elevated than the other (not cosmetic). But curious for some other opinions ?
It aligns with where the stem clamped on.
Any ideas ?

Looks like it could be cracked alright, stem was overtightened and eventually caused it to fail
The photos are so bad that no one can tell. It looks like it was mangled by whomever put the stem on or more likely took it off. The gouges are terrible.
Take it to an expert to look at it. Creaking can come from anywhere, but whomever worked on that steerer should never touch a bike again.
