I’ve been waxing for years now, but I’ve only ever had one bike to compare really. Last winter I bought a Canyon Grizl to ride gravel and commute in the depths of winter. I didn’t wax it (the Grizl chain) for a number obvious reasons, cold, gravel, wet etc etc. I did use a high end Silva wet lube though.

Recently while “cleaning” my waxed chain (aka spinning a microfiber cloth over it) I decided to use my chain checker and see how things looked. I then checked my Grizl too. The comparison kinda blew me away.

In case it isn’t obvious, the waxed chain is the blue bike with over 8000km and the Grizl is the grey one with only 2800km.

Anyways, waxing is great.

  1. Forgot to add that I’m pretty good with maintenance etc. I clean and relube/rewax both bikes fairly regularly.

  2. I’m at 7338 miles on a Connex 11-speed chain with no stretch yet. Hot wax every 300 miles, occasional drip wax in between.

  3. Aren’t those different chains as well? I would chalk up the difference largely to that rather than waxing.
