Glaswegians want to cycle more. The council wants them to cycle more, but they can’t because they don’t have access to a bike. Glasgow City Council strategic vision is to have cycling as one of people’s first choices of transport for everyday journeys and cycling mall was the third most important priority to Glaswegians. But nearly half of households don’t have access to a bike. Why? The cost of bikes and having no secure space to store bikes were explanations for this. For example, several families felt it was unaffordable, particularly those on benefits and limited incomes. The next bike hire scheme was seen as expensive or they couldn’t access it because they didn’t have a bank card or it wasn’t in a nearby location. The council has recognized that people want better access to bikes and cycling in their active travel strategy. It says they are expanding the next bike cycle higher scheme into new areas and increasing the ebike availability. And the bikes for all project aims to reduce costs and barriers for marginalized groups by offering a£3 pound annual membership for next bike with no required bank account. But is this enough?
