I am thinking of modernizing and starting out with a budget bike to see if I like electronic shifting and disc brakes. I have only ever ridden with rim brake road bikes/fixed gear, but I’m leaning towards the partypace side of cycling now. This seems like a great option, but I want to see if there are other options to consider. Any help and advice would be awesome!

Seems to be best deal going in steel gravel bikes now, lot of interest in it, and I’ve seen only positive reviews. They’re just starting up so it seems you might have to wait a bit for a bike.

Of course there’s a sea of options. Not enough space to write about it 🙂

Around 1000 you also might look at Jamis Renegade A or S series.

People love the regular Dame. Not a fan of the group set choice for the Super. I’m gonna wait for reviews before I buy.

The spec sheet says 700c, 42mm clearance at the rear which is on the smaller side. Everything else is dope.

I never liked 4130 for anything where you expect to put down power (steep climbs, faster group rides). I had an All-City space horse that was very mushy and lackluster.

As u/Horror-Raisin-877 pointed out, the Renegade has a 531 frame. I owned one and liked it much better. 42mm tire clearance is also a big limitation. 45mm minimum, 50+ preferred.

  5. That’s what I paid for full grx steel frame carbon fork, I found something on sale of course

  6. The switch to press-fit bottom bracket is weird. The rear dropouts look MUCH cleaner, though — I wish my dame had those dropouts.

The group set is definitely interesting. The pre-production versions featured by trace velo on YouTube had some pretty major problems. I’d much prefer a mechanical group set, tbh.

But I have a dame so I’m obviously not buying one.

I don’t think the wide modern fork blades match well with the classic sized and shaped tubes.
