  1. apply expensive oil to your chain like normal cyclists, to get that reassuring, socially acceptable black grinding paste enjoyed by all your cycling buddies

  2. lubing the outside of the chain does not protect it from wear. It is the grit deeply embedded inside the chain that wears out the pins. I bathe it generously in free used motor oil, which is highly detergent, and leaves behind a great lube deep in the chain where it counts. Wipe off the excess oil, leaving a shiny clean chain. The oil was still good for an engine yesterday.
