I already tried using regular tubeless tape to try to set it up tubeless. But I was not able to get the bead to catch the rim. That being said, when inflating with a tube, the tire bead pops onto the rim like a tubeless setup would, and stays on there when deflated. I read that some older rims could be converted to be TLC using thick rim tape that helps prop up the bead closer to the rim hook. Does this look like a rim that can be made to do that? If so, how reliable would it be, and is there anything extra I need to be cautious of?
I’m trying to put it on an off road bikepacking/touring rig. I already have multiple wheelsets, and this one is 32h and pretty solid. I don’t want to get another wheelset just to be able to go tubeless, and have this one sitting around.

I’ve never had a problem using any rim and any tire as tubeless. I just used one layer of gorilla tape across the rim. I am confused what you mean when you say you were not able to get the beat to catch? Do you mean you inflated the tire but it didn’t snap into place? Or that you can’t get the air to stop leaking? If the problem was the second one, you simply need to use an air compressor. Once it seats, you’ll be good to go.

Should work, if it’s taped properly, not leaking air and it’s just the tire that won’t seat all they way, try lubing up the rim with sealant.
