  1. a dork disc!
should be about 15-20 USD at your local bike shop. Make sure to get it replaced

  2. Nothing really. The plastic disc is just a safety separator for the chain and spokes for if the bike is poorly maintained and the derailleur ends up shifting the chain into the spokes due to set screw and shifter not being adjusted properly. Most people with nicer bikes remove this anyway.

When I work on friends’ bikes I leave or remove it depending on how careful I judge them to be about their stuff. I leave it on most kids bikes.

  3. I broke a spoke of my bone stock 1993 Giant Allegre. I took the back wheel to Zummo’s Bicycle Co-op in Berwyn, PA. For $35 they replaced the spoke and trued the wheel in one day. I live seeing all the middle and high school kids doing repairs and bicycle detailing.

Your broken disc and spoke replacement shouldn’t cost much more.

That plastic ring…? Rip it off with some pliers and never think about it again.
