The highlighted piece I cannot for the life of me put back in. I can see that it helps to stabilize and position the chain tensioner, but the metal has no grooves, nor does the area it’s meant to go into. Additionally, the metal piece has two parts that are now screwed into themselves and I can’t separate them.

I was able to replace my rear flat fine without it otherwise.

I realize again this piece seemingly stabilizes the chain tensioner, but is it unsafe to ride without that piece installed?

  1. That is the main part that keeps the chain tensioner attached to the rear frame so yeah it’s definitely required. You took it apart so you should know that the two parts separate and one goes on the back side and the hex side screws in from the front? Just separate the two pieces and put it back correctly? Use an Allen key and some pliers to grip the other side if you have to.

PS you don’t even need to remove the chain tensioner when changing a tyre.
