Looking to get my first MTB, since I am new to this hobby I do not want to spend a lot of money out the gate.
I am not looking to do anything crazy and really just want a bike that I can go to local parks to ride the dirt trails and also payment roads to get some light cardio in.
I am looking at either the Specialized Rockhopper( or sport) or the Ozark Trail ridge from Walmart.
It seems I am getting quite a better overall bike with the Rockhopper in regards to build/quality/parts without the need to upgrade immediately. There is also a few different variations of the Rockhopper.

The specialized is quite a bit lighter and comes out of the box with hydraulic brakes. But I think the biggest advantage is that if you end up wanting to sell it down the line, either to upgrade or if you decide it’s not for you, it’s going to be a lot easier and you’ll lose less money.
Rock hopper
None. You’re buying the specialized name only, as the rear hub size is not 148mm.
You want 148mm , also called boost.
This IS the standard industry size for all mountain bikes right now. All cheaper bikes have less than 148 (135mm, 141mm, or 142mm). $10k bikes have 148mm. Look at the spesh epic or levo e-bikes.
You’ll have upgrade issues in the long run if you don’t have 148mm.
Cheapest 148mm bike is this (if you’re in the USA). You can turn this Cannondale into a $5k weapon of riding destruction one day.
The spesh and ozark? Nope.
