It amazes me that these are even asked, clearly it’s done it’s job, so buy a new one.

Bicycle helmets are designed to take one big impact, after that they’re no longer protective. A helmet that can take multiple hits, like an American football helmet, would be too hot and heavy for comfortable cycling.

This small crack might not seem like much to you (although, that is a significant break) the structure of the entire helmet is now compromised. Any time your helmet has a big crack like this, it’s done.

This is also true for motorcycle helmets, if there’s any visible damage it must be replaced.

  3. As a general rule of thumb: bike-helmets are only ment to be worn in a single crash (unlike mountaineering helmets for example)
Cracks in the styrofoam can sometimes not be visible while still massively reducing the integrity of the helmet. This is also why I’d recommend wearing a cheap (but still certified!) helmet for commuting. The price doesn’t mean it’s less safe, it will most likely just be more bulky, less aero, less comfortable or alike.
