The medieval walls of Avignon weren’t just for show.
They were built during a turbulent time when popes, kings, and rival armies threatened the city’s survival.
These 14th-century defenses still surround the old town today — a rare sight in Europe.

Encircling the historic center of Aignyong, these massive stone walls stretch for over 4 kilometers. They were built in the 14th century when Avignyong became the seat of the papacy. For nearly 70 years, popes ruled from here instead of Rome and the city needed protection. France was in turmoil. The H 100red Years War was raging and roaming bands of mercenaries looted towns across the region. To guard the papal court and the growing population, builders raised 39 towers, fortified gates, and a wall thick enough to stop an army. Unlike most medieval walls, Avignyong survived the centuries. Intact, imposing, and still standing watch. Don’t forget to like and subscribe for more shorts like this one. [Music]

There were two pope's actually?
I've been lucky to live in Avignon for 1.5 years. Beautiful city. You can cross it with a 10 min walk. If you got the chance, get to the flowery park near the Palais des Papes early in the morning. Nobody's there, the park will belong to you. The light is wonderful and you get a great view over the Rhone river on one side, and on the Palais on the other side.
Nobody trusted the Avignon Papacy–too many popes..three at once!!
No. 4 KILOMETRES. In France they do not fu$k up English.
There's nothing like underinvestment to preserve old architecture. Prosperity brings renovation and replacement.
