I put a rack on my bike and want my setup to have a decent sized dry bag on the rear rack (20L) or backpack on my rear rack. I got the idea from this guy on YouTube, that put a Exped Ice 30L backpack on his rear rack. Seems nicer on single track than panniers to me:

I think I’ll go for the SeaToSummit Big River 20L dry bag. However, I just noticed this Ortlieb Atrack 25 backpack:

It’s kind of a duffle back to be used as a backpack that is fully waterproof. It would be great to bring that on long trips, because we do a lot of hiking/birding on the off-days. Sure, you have some extra wait that would be worth it for me. The straps would be a bit annoying but might be manageable.

It’s hard to say how they’ll fit on my Surly Ogre + Tubus Cargo Evo rack.
Any experiences here? Advice? I guess I’ll start with buying a 20L Big River bag for short trips and then potentially supplement it with the Atrack/Packman for when I do a year-trip.

I saw the same guy this week actually while browsing Youtube. The backpack idea makes a lot of sense for someone doing long distance riding, like months at a time. You can leave the bike somewhere and have a nice pack to bring gear with you. Most people are not riding that much though and a traditional bag would be totally fine. I do not think you can go wrong with either bag. If I start doing longer distance rides I will probably go this route. Sorry I cannot be more help lol.
It depends how large of a pack you need for your daily adventures, but IMO, a dry bag is superior for what it does, and you could always toss a super light and packable sea-to-summit pack for when you leave for peak bagging or whatever. They make a 2.5oz 20l pack. Probably not comfortable for heavy loads, however.
A 20L dry bag strapped into the top of the rack with 2 long Voile straps works perfectly. I put a jumper on top of the bag so I can just stop and grab it if I want to wear it.
