  1. Doesn’t look to me like the metal was damaged. Probably just rubbed against a tire or something and wore away the rubber coating.

    Tire rub. I have the same thing on a plastic coated cable lock. It met the tire and they hung out for miles. Now the wire rope is exposed and there’s a nice, clean bald spot in the plastic just like yours.

  3. I had the same thing on my lock, turns out it was rubbing on my pannier rack (where i mounted it), over time the rubber looked just like that.

  4. Doesnt look like a theft attempt. A grinder attack would use a cutting disk that would put a vertical notch in your bolt. This looks like it is sanded. Other people are saying it looks like the lock is rubbing against something. That seems most likely to me.

    It rubbed the tire. This literally happened to me Friday night. I have an unconventional method of mounting my lock on my bike.
