Dude was on the wrong side of the bike lane, gassing it through a blind turn. Hit me head on and broke a carbon wheel and a brake rotor. I’m a bit beat up, but no broken bones or anything. I’m bummed about the replacement cost and being off the bike until I get a new wheel delivered from overseas.

I could tell I wasn’t badly injured, and the guy maintained that he took the turn correctly, stating I went wide. I know people say to get info in a crash, adrenaline blunting pain, etc. But I just thought the hassle of getting the police involved wasn’t worth it – I only got his name and phone number. Was I wrong for thinking this way?

Just sick of these insane wattage electric vehicles on the bike path, and the users having zero handling skills. Fortunately, lots of friendly people on the trail asking if I was okay – cyclists sharing stories about their crashes.

  1. Generally, mixed-use paths only allow Class 1 electric vehicles. In a crash like this you should absolutely get insurance involved, because the presence of 20+ mph electric vehicles on mixed-use paths is in-and-of-itself highly illegal, but without enforcement, insurance is the only way they’re ever going to feel the pain.

  2. Why wouldn’t you call the police? If this happens to me I’m getting a report done and going right to small claims court. If I have to place a lien on the person and wait decades I will.

  3. Name and phone number is enough for insurance to go after them. What you need to do now is to file a police report right away, take pictures of your and your bike’s injuries. Go to a doctor and get it all checked out. Then talk to an injury lawyer. Keep in mind that if you have a car, you may be covered by your car insurance even if you are on a bike.

  4. They’re the culprit in ALL the close calls I’ve had in the last few years. Most people are fine on them. Some aren’t. Most scooters are fine. Some are way overpowered.

Sad about the wreck, though. Worth following through on it. Thank you for not immediately trashing the scooter driver. I’ve given a few thorough tongue lashings.

In a lot of Europe those vehicles are illegal and there is actual enforcement. Waiting for it to come here.

There’s a blind corner on a bike path near me at the top of a steep hill. Traditionally it would be impossible for anyone to be going fast around it coming from down the hill but lately I’ve almost been hit by electric motos blasting around and cutting the corner at car speeds. They often screech and slide sideways to avoid me.

  6. HATE those things fucking so stressful to be a pedestrian around people are always just driving them flat out no sense of speed

Maybe if these illegal vehicles were reported to the police they could do something. But now you his this accident so they won’t even know about it.

You’re sadly part of the problem.

  8. I’ve been reading up on the PEV side of things and watching a bunch of reviews. Indeed it’s pretty wild to think the latest super scooters (over 120lbs, 72v batteries) can reach speeds of 60mph. Not to mention many of the 7000-watt ebikes are trying to float under the laws by attaching pedals, etc.

Glad you’re ok, if it helps any, I ride with an action camera set on the lowest resolution, this seems to be enough to keep recording on my rides. I haven’t used it yet but in the case of something like this, it might be good evidence to prove who’s at fault.

  9. I guess at least we found out what happens to Farsports wheels in this kind of accident. Yikes!

    Glad you’re ok

all the people saying it’s too late to do anything are incorrect – just call or file a police report online!

that’s what i did when i got hit by a car – in the moment with the adrenaline and everything i didn’t even think to call the police until after the fact when my parents came to pick me up. i filed a police report online and was able to get the cost of all my repairs + a new helmet covered by the other person’s insurance
