Only one in 10 Glaswegians feel they can cycle for everyday journeys as much as they would like to. A lack of safe places to cycle was a significant reason for this. According to a public consultation in 2020, 5 years on, is it safer to cycle in Glasgow? In 2024, a 2mile safe segregated cycle route from Queens Park to Trungate was completed. Claimed to be one of the most ambitious urban cycle routes in the country. Since there’s been a 46% increase in the number of cycle journeys along the route, as well as increases in journeys on nearby streets. This is part of the council’s planned 270 km cycle route network in the city. So far, work on the George F Bridge has been completed and the connecting Battlefield and Woodside projects have made progress. Due to start is work on York Hill and Kelvin Grove, Melinda Burn, Dumbre Road and the East City Way. Significantly, the council has put in a bid for government funding on 11 km around the inner north and south of Glasgow. Whether the 6% fall in cycling casualties and decrease in cycling fatalities is as a result of this progress is uncertain, but safer places to cycle are becoming a reality. What do you think?
