Right now I have a cheap OnGuard cable lock which I dont feel safe with. I've seen the really great but also expansive bike locks like OnGuard's Rock Solid U lock but that's also $270. Should I splurge on a great lock and have that for years and years to come or what is the sweet spot? I dont have a multi thousand dollar bike as I just got back into biking but I have gotten a past bike stolen and I just want some ease of mind.

Ongaurd, abus, or kryptonite U locks
At the end of the day, all locks are deterrents more than anything else. Even with an unbreakable lock, I’ve seen wheels stolen & frames ruined by thieves.
Personally, I try and lock my bike up where I can keep an eye on it & I have an AirTag under the bottle cage just in case. I think that’s about the best security you can get.
That said, kryptonite u-locks are great. All of their products are pretty good (and affordable). The only thing I don’t recommend is a cable lock like the one you have
Ulocks are the best method to deter the opportunistic thief. Nothing is guaranteed to work against organized and determined thieves.
My bike costs me $800 used and my locks all together cost me about $430 …I have different locks for different use cases…and I still don’t have a grinder resistant u-lock – that’s the last one I plan to add to the set.
I knew I wasn’t always going to have a “cheap” bike but I will have these locks for years ..worth while investment imo…The question isn’t should you splurge on a better – it’s how much are you willing to lose on the bike with a lesser lock….
I have a Kryponite Cinch chain lock, a Hiplok Gold chain lock, 2 Foldylock Forevers, and an older OnGuard u lock…
I don’t carry all with me at once but usually have one chain, and 2 foldies on the bike at all times (big cargo ebike so weight isn’t a concern). I use one chain to lock up in my garage, and the u lock is in the backpack for quick stops where high security is less of a concern…
The best u lock you can get are Hiplok and LitLock but you will pay a serious premium for them. The grinder resistant Kryponite and OnGuard are also good…Abus grinder resistant one is decent though multiple testers have shown how it can be defeated – has a pretty well known weak spot in its design…
This guys does great reviews and testing on locks – I found him to be a great resource when planning out my purchases…I bought things slowly as things went on sale…took 2-3yrs to amass all those locks
