Hello!

I'm in the market for a new bike and having trouble deciding. I'm looking for a bike that'll be used primarily for commuting and longer rides on a paved path. There is a good chance I'd take it on light gravel occasionally, and eventually use it for short bikepacking trips (long weekends, maybe GAP trail).

I currently have a Liv Alight and I'm looking to upgrade to something speedier/nimbler with drop bars. Everyone seems to love the Surly Preamble, but I'm wondering if its worth it to spend the extra $500USD for the hydraulic brakes/aluminum frame of the Canyon Endurace AllRoad? I was initially skeptical of steel because I do want the bike to be light (gotta carry up to my apt.), but I know steel is more sturdy for the occasional bikepack trip.

Let me know your thoughts! Links here:

  1. Both of these you will be thinking about maxing out the tire clearance with a 40mm tire for bikepacking gravel even on a really well maintained route like the gap trail so I would consider going up to the gravel category of bike for the versatility to do all the things you want to on the future. The drivetrain on the preamble is very limited in range as well, I personally have not been the biggest fan. The canyon is great value and worth the extra for me. If you like the Surly under 1000 not too hard to get a used cross check or straggler instead.
