My first ever build after volunteering for the last few months at my local bike shed and learning the tools.
This is a 1992 Giant ATX 770. Pics 7-10 are how it was when it was first donated, I then stripped the frame fully, gave it a clean and polish, polished up the XT cranks and disassembled and cleaned/lubed the rear XT 8 speed derailleur. Most of the parts are secondhand except the bars, grips, pedals (which I'll likely swap for MKS bear traps) and Rivendell friction shifters.
I'm running 2×9 (friction with the 8 speed derailleur) with a 24t/40t chainring combo and an 11-32 cassette in back. Bars are Nitto B802 HT from Blue Lug. Tyres are Continental Race King 26×2.2.
Would like to add a Pelago medium front rack when the next paycheck comes in and eventually make a frame bag.
The first bike packing trip will be 180km over this long weekend. Hope it doesn't fall into a pile of nuts and bolts on the trail. Any questions hit me in the comments!

Dig the 2x crank, like a 1x but with a bailout gear. That’s the best setup IMO. My Surly LHT is set up similarly: 38t/28t, 11-36t, 2×9 with friction shifters.
Hell yeah. I’m always keeping an eye out for a pink 770, as I think they just look super neat (plus that fork!). What part of Australia are you in? I do a bit of volunteer/ co-op stuff in the Canberra area.
Something about that seatpost/saddle combo seems… odd.
Best giant paint
Dope first build!
Jealous. One of these popped up for sale about an hour and a half from my house over the summer. Seller wasn’t willing to send measurements and when I asked them what size frame they said, “Pretty sure this is a 28 inch bike”. I wasn’t willing to drive an hour and a half to figure out it was the wrong size. But boy, I still think about that bike cause the pink paint and the fork design are so cool.
