The one advantage of the schwinn is the disk brakes but bad disk brakes can be just as bad or worse than rim brakes. I’d get the one that fits better. Both are not very capable but totally fine on smooth dirt paths and gravel roads.

Oh boy, those are shitty bikes, what is your budget?

I don’t think anyone can possibly say which of these two bikes are better. Have you ridden them? Do they fit you? Do they shift through all the gears?
Neither of them are particularly recent bikes – you better not be paying much for them. The first one at least has disk brakes so I would lean towards that one but who knows.

The first one, if you’re paying more than 150 used then you are getting ripped off. The first one has disc brakes and at least some tire tread, the second is more of a pavement bike.

honestly. keep looking. How much are these? better be like $60
Both of these bikes kinda stink, but for $50 you can only expect so much. If these bikes are $100+ keep looking.

The Schwinn is an insult, the Giant comes close to being a usable bike. At least the brakes will work. And you’ll be riding a brand that you will see regularly on the trails, so you can grow into mountain biking (whereas the Schwinn will probably make you grow out of it…).

Not to sound entitled but you probably want to increase your budget or save a bit longer. You can start finding some decent bikes to start on around $500. Cheaper than that and the parts are probably not going to stand up to abuse and aren’t as serviceable if something does break. This is coming from experience with a buddy who picked it up recently. Definitely don’t need to spend thousands to get a good bike but if you want to have fun and have something that lasts it’ll be worth the extra money.
