Welcome to Cannes, France! Get ready for a stunning walk filled with sunshine, color, and charm! We’ll see the seafront, troll through charming streets, climb to a scenic viewpoint, and get a feel for how the city lives in summer. Cannes is a coastal city located in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southeastern France. It sits along the Mediterranean Sea on the famous French Riviera, about 30 km (18 miles) southwest of Nice. As of recent statistics, Cannes has a population of approximately 75,000 residents. This number increases significantly during the summer tourist season. Cannes attracts approximately 3 million visitors annually. We’re now walking along La Croisette, the famous boulevard that runs along the Mediterranean coast. This area is home to the Palais des Festivals, upscale hotels such as the Martinez and Carlton, stylish shops, and top-tier dining. And you’ll see it all during our stroll. The area we now know as Cannes has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The first known settlers were the Ligurians, an ancient people who lived in southeastern France and northwestern Italy. Around the 2nd century BCE, the region came under Roman control, and a small coastal settlement began to develop. The Romans called the area Portus Canuae and used it as a minor port and lookout point along the Mediterranean. In the 5th century, Christianity spread through the region. Just offshore from Cannes lies Île Saint-Honorat, part of the Lérins Islands. Around 410 AD, Saint Honoratus founded the Lérins Abbey on the island. The abbey quickly became an important religious and cultural center, attracting monks, scholars, and pilgrims. Over the following centuries, the monks played a major role in the region’s life — both spiritual and political. We’re passing by the iconic Carlton Cannes, a historic hotel that opened its doors in 1913. It’s a true symbol of Cannes. Many celebrities stay here during the Cannes Film Festival. Carlton is also known for a series of daring jewelry heists. Most notably in 2013, when jewels worth around €103 million were stolen during an exhibition. It was one of the largest thefts in French history. During the 10th to 15th centuries, Cannes remained a small fishing village under the protection of the monks from Lérins Abbey. The town was often threatened by pirates and Saracen raiders, and as a result, defensive structures and lookout towers were built along the coastline. The hill known today as Le Suquet was fortified during this time, becoming the historic heart of Cannes. We’ll head up that hill a bit later. As France centralized under royal rule, the monks’ political influence declined. By the 16th century, Cannes began to fall under the control of regional nobles and, later, the French crown However, it remained a modest and relatively isolated village with a population focused on fishing, farming, and maritime trade. The transformation of Cannes began in the 19th century especially after 1834, when Lord Henry Brougham, a British statesman and former Lord Chancellor, was traveling to Italy and got stranded in the region due to a cholera outbreak. He stayed in Cannes, fell in love with its mild climate and stunning scenery, and decided to build a villa there. Brougham’s endorsement turned Cannes into a fashionable winter resort for the British aristocracy. Soon after, the French and other European elites followed. The city began to develop quickly — luxury villas, grand hotels, and elegant promenades were built. The railway arrived in 1863, making Cannes accessible from Paris and beyond. In the early 20th century, Cannes continued to grow as a luxurious destination. Elegant hotels like the Carlton, Martinez, and Majestic became symbols of its high-end appeal. But the biggest turning point came in 1946, with the creation of the Cannes Film Festival. Originally conceived as a cultural answer to fascist film festivals in Europe, it quickly gained international prestige. The festival transformed Cannes into a global symbol of cinema, glamour, and luxury. Over the decades, the city expanded its reputation, attracting celebrities, filmmakers, business people, and tourists from all over the world. Major conferences like MIPCOM and Cannes Lions also contributed to Cannes’ rise as a hub for international events. How do you like Cannes?
