Picked up an old peugeot U08, been wanting one for awhile. Have a few questions, I see people talking about the plastic wing nuts on the quick release wheel skewers, what purpose do they even serve? I see there’s also a metal screw cap. Would it be better to find a new nut or just replace the skewers entirely ? Also, I’m planning on replacing the simplex derailleurs with suntour vx derailleurs. Is that fairly plug and play or will I need to do any modifications? And lastly, if I want to replace the steel rims what size should I look for for replacement?

Why. They’re not rare and not collectors items, and the lowest-quality bike of the 70s. With all the money you’re about to dump into your project you can buy a PX10.

I fixed up the model that came after this, it was actually made in Canada. I took a lot of parts from a later Panasonic (that did not fit me) with 700c wheels. I had to buy long reach tectro brakes, grip tape and new decals for the frame. I suggest looking for a donor bike.

  3. Those us that had UO8s back in the day longed for a PX10 but at least the UO8 was affordable and was fun to ride. It was also not a heavy tank like the Schwinn Varsity and other domestic offerings of the time.

That said, I’d skip out on one now in favor of something better like the PX10 if you’re into Peugeots. The cranks and rims just aren’t worth upgrading given that the frame is only just ok.

In any case, have fun with whatever you decide to do!
