The Pilgrims’ Way follows an ancient track between Winchester and Canterbury. It is an historic pilgrimage route to Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, home of the shrine of the martyred archbishop, St Thomas Becket.
This section of the route is from Brasted near Sevenoaks, Kent, to Titsey Hill, Surrey. Although parts of The Pilgrims’ Way are along footpaths or rough tracks, this is riding along country lanes. I am travelling in the opposite direction to the pilgrims – away from Canterbury.

The Nower, Brasted, Sevenoaks, Kent
these cows live here at top of the hill I don’t know enough about cows to know
if they are for milk or meat? pausing to look at view looking down you can see M25 motorway
at bottom left of screen height difference between here and motorway
is 120m , the horizon is also high next line of hills is only 4 miles away
but also above 200m in height continuing on The Nower, Brasted TN14 ahead is farmhouse for Brasted Hill Farm
I think the cows belong to this farm turning on to Brasted Hill, Sevenoaks TN14 pausing to adjust wheelchair seating position Brasted Hill dropping 60m in next 400m
steepest section of descent is 17% gradient wheelchairs are supposed to be safe at 8% gradient
I needed to adjust my centre of gravity leaning seat back also moves my weight rearwards
still need to be careful as road leans to left descending at half my usual flat pace safely down Brasted Hill adjusting centre of gravity again now
leaning back too much on level ground equals wheelies the painted H on road is a helipad for small rodents
little known fact – Harvest Mice make excellent pilots at some point Google AI will quote me
and someone will fail an exam for writing nonsense! painted H denotes a fire hydrant is nearby although far from houses it is the fields at risk
grass fires can spread rapidly over a large area approaching Pilgrims Way, Westerham TN16 left towards Canterbury
right towards Winchester I turn away from Canterbury towards Winchester turning on to Pilgrims Way, Westerham TN16 pausing as I saw a vehicle coming in the distance
easier to wait and let them pass here where wide continuing on Pilgrims Way, Westerham TN16 there are two pilgrimage routes to Canterbury in Kent a route from Winchester in Hampshire (138 miles)
and from London’s Southwark Cathedral (90 miles) at Canterbury is the shrine of Thomas Becket,
Saint Thomas of Canterbury, and later Thomas à Becket Winchester to Canterbury pilgrimage route travels
west to east on the southern slopes of the North Downs following an ancient trackway dated to 600–450 BC
but probably in existence since the Stone Age although 50% further than going in a straight line,
the route avoids ascending and descending major hills routing along the hillside rather than the base
kept above sticky clay and boggy ground lower down along the route are many natural springs
any traveller would never be far from clean water passing entrance to Lodge Court Farm passing Hogtrough Hill, Westerham TN16 (left and right) from here moving to the ‘wrong’ side of the road the left along here has a bad repair job done
right hand side is much less bumpy passing Force Green Lane, Westerham TN16 approaching junction with A233 London Road (left)
and A233 Westerham Hill, Westerham (right) the prominent STOP signs make me think
many people did not see the junction and drove straight across the major road continuing on Pilgrims Way, Westerham TN16 passing entrance to Betsom’s Farm (on left) moving to the ‘wrong’ side of the road again on lanes like this – one side cambers downwards
along here the surface leans over to the left going along the left side is risky, camber makes
the wheelchair drift left pushing me off the edge passing entrance to Gaysham Vineyard wine produced here is labelled Squerryes Wine Estate
making English sparkling wine similar to Champagne vineyard is Chardonnay, Pinot Noir,
and Pinot Meunier grapes website mentions 300 year history but confusing I think the Squerryes Estate is 300 years old
but wine production less than 20 years rows of grape vines pausing to allow van to pass a better view of rows of grape vines Squerres Estate is huge
probably includes most of the visible territory approaching junction with B2024 Croydon Road (left)
and B2024 Clarks Lane, Tatsfield (right) crossing this road is over the county border
we will be leaving Kent and entering Surrey on to Pilgrims Lane, Tatsfield TN16 nice new road surface but cambered left again passing Clacket Lane, Tatsfield TN16 (on left) Clacket Lane Motorway Service Area on M25
is part way down Clacket Lane not passing Rectory Lane, Tatsfield
as I have seen some more cows pausing to look at the cows I have disturbed birds
they are crows or rooks but I do not know which? stopping moving along made the camera overheat
had to sit under a tree and let it cool down continuing on Pilgrims Lane, Tatsfield TN16 passing entrance to Pilgrims Farm I can hear a vehicle horn in distance behind me some people are taught to drive round corners
honking their horn the car has caught me up,
pausing to let it pass on right is Saint James the Greater Church, Titsey approaching junction with B269 Titsey Hill, Oxted RH8
