I bought this Rocky Mountain of a friend who built it from the frame but never rode it. Bike rides great and it is up for sale for $3800 now since I put it up for 5k and people just save it.

I wanna get rid of it because i have some short-term goals that require money and I dont need this bike anymore. I rode it about 7 times total since I hurt my wrist. Can someone please lmk if the price is too high or if the market it’s just that bad? What would you do in my situation? Sell, just keep it and sell next season?

  1. The market is absolutely cooked right now. Post it in as many places as you can. Best of luck!

  2. That’s dope bike. The asking price is reasonable and if I were in the market, I would absolutely consider this build for that price.

  3. It’s definitely not great right now. Was planning to sell my sped out Giant Trance X with that exact same wheel set and hubs too (on my post history) and nobody would really grab for it. Ended up just deciding to keep it and have an analog bike and an electric bike.

During COVID prices got stupid high. Inventory was low, everyone wanted to ride. Now all those bikes are largely gathering dust unused. Used prices are cratering. Bike shops in my area are going out of business now. It’s quite sad.

Where is the bike listed? You’ll get more if you can find someone who wants something specific and a larger audience. What year is the frame? Wheel set? Fork. All those things will dictate price. Location as well. I only buy used bikes and target 50% of retail or less. Got my last bike for $2200 Trek Remedy with a carbon frame. It was two years old and owned by a bike mechanic. Your price seems high but that bike looks new. Depending on your year you’re probably looking for a buyer who’s waffling between buying that bike new and used and just happened to find the exact build he wanted for sale used.

Good luck with your sale! That bike looks rad.

  5. I wouldn’t drop the price, but you’ll have to be patient. If anything I would raise it to flat $4k and be ready to haggle it down a bit to make the sale.

The world of people who buy high end bikes is small. People buying high end used bikes is even smaller. And buying high end used bikes at the end of the regular riding season is even smaller than that.

You could easily be sitting on it until spring before it sells if you want at least a reasonable amount for it.

On top of an already spiraling market, people’s earnings aren’t going as far, and I think a lot of people are just choosing not to spend discretionary money for the time being.

  7. For a 2024 with that build the price seems right. I’m assuming the rims are carbon, but even if aluminum the price is good.

But, you will need to find someone who appreciates those I9 wheels. I had a set with the proprietary spokes and really liked them, but some people will be put off by them.

It may also be about the wording on the ad. If you have something similar to what you wrote here (bought from a friend who never rode it, only a few rides, my loss your gain…) people may be thinking “too good to be true.”

Also, it may be a local market thing. Like someone pointed out that is quite the sled geared for some chunky stuff. There may not be a market where you live

  8. Selling a high end bike is like trying to sell a performance car that you’ve modified, you will never get a good return on the upgrades and time you spent on it.

  9. It’s just gone back to normal pre Covid demand and pricing. And trying to sell a high end bike for a good price at the end of riding season is always a tough sell. I sell my bike every year. This is a terrible time to sell bikes, nobody is looking right now. If you ca wait, put it back up after tax time/early spring.

  10. Rocky Mountain is not the most popular bike in the US, but that built is VERY nice ! !

Price is right IMO but it still a buyer market right now.

  11. The only thing that depreciates faster than a BMW off the lot is a high-end mountain bike. Beef steak prices are 10 bucks a pound, Trump tariffs are at 50%+ from China, people are broke as a joke, who’s got money for $4000 mountain bike?

  12. The pool for ppl looking for high end used bikes had always been small. Currently even new bikes are sitting and going on sale for the same price as a used bike. Def a weird time for the cycling market. The right person is out there just going to take some time.

  13. is that a DH Bike? High End long travel bikes always have a fairly shit market as there’s very few buyers compared to other segments. Bike market is definitely not great right now, but this is a niche bike even in the best of times.

Now add onto it that it’s not a top-of-mind brand (Rocky Mountain vs. Santa Cruz/Specialized etc.) and it’s a recipe for deep discounting. If you really want to get rid of it, I’m betting you’d probably be able to part it out provided it’s not a weird steerer size/standard.

  14. I have a V1 ripmo that I’m just keeping as a park bike vs selling right now because I dont think it would be worth it to sell.

Good luck, get it as many places as you can! Seems like bikes move on the radavist marketplace, too.
