I just bought a Trek FX 7.2 with fenders, cargo rack and bags, and custom handlebars installed. It's perfect for my commute and a significant upgrade over the ten year old Schwinn I've been riding for the last eight months. Here's the thing, I got it for 350 dollars and I'm starting to see from community opinion that i might have over paid. So far I love it, and can't wait to ride it to work every day, but it seems like I could have had the same experience for at least $100 less. Am I over thinking this?

  1. I think 350 for that is decent depending on your area. Figure a basic working bike for 100-125, rear rack and panniers 75-150, lock 40-50, butterfly bars 60-80, fenders 25-40.

  2. $350 is reasonable. Nice thing buying a bike that has some customizations, it’s likely been well cared for in general.

that’s a fair price for a good running bike with accessories. everyone here is cheap and think anything more than 100$ for a bike is a rip off. go look at the costs of mudguards and labor to get them mounted

  4. If it was recently serviced 350 probably wouldn’t be that bad but I wouldn’t have paid that much for something like that used

  5. If you paid for a Trek bike and received a Trek bike, it’s not a scam. A scam would be if you paid for a Trek bike but received a knock off. Or maybe you paid for a Trek bike and received nothing. Luckily for you, you received an awesome commuter bike that’ll last you for decades if you choose.

  6. I purchased a fx7.5 for $150 came with rear rack, fenders, bags, lights, tools, and bike lock. BUT I only got this deal bc the older gentleman recently had abdominal surgery and it wouldn’t be safe for him to ride again EVER. So he just wanted it gone! I messaged him and picked it up next day. BEST score ive ever gotten. Ridden the bike a bunch and love it.

For a 7.2 with all the extras and being serviced I think 350 is a bit high. Not sure what the bars are and if that would add value. Like you implied maybe 250 would have been a sweet spot.

Not sure on your market and availability but you got a nice bike and you seem excited about it. The money is spent. Enjoy the bike

250 too much. Immediately if it doesn’t have disc brakes or at least disc brake mounts, that’s a massive hit.

Everyone saying you got a good deal don’t realize that this wasn’t an expensive model to begin with 15 years ago.

I am sorry to tell you that the person that sold the bike to you made off like a bandit, but at the same time, two things could be true: you could have an ok bike, no way to tell if everything works well or not and if it’s been serviced properly (likely not). So you got ripped off AND an ok, lower-mid bike from 15 years ago.

    Are you overthinking this? Yes.

Assuming everything’s in good order, $350 is well within normal so if the bike fits you and you like it, go for a ride and enjoy it!

Also, you got a bike that’s already got a rack, panniers, fenders and Marathons. Not having to replace/install that stuff is worth something too, doubly so if you’d have to pay someone to do the work.

  9. Scam is a fraudulent transaction. If you saw the bike, and you willingly paid $350 for the bike, then it is not a scam.

Is it overpriced? That is highly dependent on where you live, used market pricing in your area, your needs, how long you are willing to search and wait.

Just using used prices estimates. Bike itself is probably worth $125-$175. Bike rack is like $20. Cargo bag can vary in price depending on quality: $25-$75. Fenders cost $25.

And tune-up can vary between $0-$200, depending on what work is needed.

I would say $350 is a bit toward the higher end, but not outrageous.

Sure, maybe you could have fount something for a bit less, but how much would your extra effort to find it be worth? Overall I think you got reasonable value (particularly since it was fully outfitted for commuting – adding racks and fenders is often under valued by community opinion for bike value – of course your seller got a bit lucky that they found a buyer who recognized that value).

  11. I paid $90 for a used FX7.2 last year and I immediately dropped about $350 on parts and repairs to get it in to shape for daily commuting. If your bike is in good condition then I would say you did just fine.

The tires alone are worth at least $60 new for the pair. The bike looks like a solid buy to me.

  13. It’s a good deal if everything is functional and cared for. At least around where I am, typical resellers are charging $300 minimum for a quality bike that might be 10+ years old with no accessories.

Of course, a savvy buyer can do better hunting around FB marketplace, but you got a good deal.

  14. No, you didn’t get scammed. A solid commuter with fenders and rack already installed? And it came with panniers? AND custom bar tape on top of that? You got a sweet deal, actually

  15. Unless the bike arrived in pieces, or ended up being a completely different junky bike then no, you got a pretty good deal.
