How do you all handle roundabouts on your bike? If there's a bike lane, do you use it? Or do you try and get in the mix with cars? Or do you use the crosswalks and sidewalks? Any safety tips?

I'm always reminded of that episode of CatDog in which they get stuck on the traffic island. I love roundabouts for driving, but they scare the shit out of me as a cyclist.

P.S. Yes I have eaten shit on the tracks here, but I am also afraid of all other roundabouts without tracks.

  1. Fortunately all the roundabouts I have to deal with are so called Dutch roundabouts so I never have to enter the actual roundabout. We also have one monstrosity with traffic lights for pedestrians/cyclists which sucks for drivers because the entire roundabout comes to a standstill when someone needs to cross, but it’s great for those who walk or cycle.

  2. Take it just like a car, get in and get out at your turn.

I’ve only dealt with single lane roundabouts but I’d stick to the outside lane

Edit: upvoted for catdog, loved that shoe as a kid

  3. I avoid these. Too many blind spots for drivers. There’s one near my commute where vehicles are entering the roundabout from an interstate off ramp, usually still in high speed mode.

In US. Before, speed up, take lane
Look left and across for cars that might have right away
Take inside to avoid cats coming on right
    Move right before exit
