If it’s a HED tri spoke wheel, I never used rim tape on mine. I also never flatted. So my N=1 says No.

No you don’t need rim tape. Its only purpose is to protect the tube against sharp edges.

For those who are saying that it doesn’t need tape, wouldn’t the tape cover the edges to a certain level in a way that the tire sits on top of it?
