[Music] these are the remains of St bov’s prior in Colchester the prior was founded between 1093 and 1100 and it was one of the first augustinian priories in England it’s in Ruins today largely because it was badly damaged by cannon fire during the Civil War Siege of 1648 but despite that it’s a remarkable survival of early Norman architecture it’s built in Flint and brick which was reused from the Roman buildings nearby and in typical Norman fashion it’s got these massive circular pillars and rounded arches and a pretty elaborate West front so though the prior is in ruins it gives us a glimpse of how Magnificent the original structure must have been what would those Norman Craftsman had thought I wonder had they known that their work would still be standing and their creation still bringing Delight to the people of Colchester over 900 years later [Music]

  1. Thanks for this.

I’m not sure the builders would have been al that surprised that some of their structure was still standing, since they would have know of Roman structures lasting that long. I have been driven over a roughly two thousand year old Roman bridge in eastern Turkey.

  2. Thank you Alice. It seems that in their day, they would have been the modern age, the pinnacle of science, engineering, education.

Wishing you a positive new year.
