I have a set of Koolstop Dura brake pads for carbon fiber rims. I think they work about as well as possible for carbon, but the centers of the pads are not bedding properly and the points of contact quickly get shiny and hardened, limiting their power. The rear pads seem to suffer this problem more (see photos). When I file the surface they are pretty decent. I've tried adding some layers of tape to push up the middle back of the pads and I've also tried sanding the faces down to reveal fresh material. I am using normal 105 calipers and Elitewheels Edge which have quite a smooth surface.

  1. Try and get a decent toe in on the beginning of the pad (i.e. – You don’t want the pad to be square to the wheel from the beginning). You should be able to do this with the cone washers on the brake block itself.

    Good luck

  2. Big fan of the Swissstop Black Prince pads for this application. They do wear fairly quickly with my riding style, and at $50 a set aren’t cheap, but they do a decent job of stopping. Try em and see?
