Title. I’m just starting to work on my own bike for fun. I would like suggestions on how to move forwards and the tooks I may need.
Many thanks in advance
Upgrading the drivetrain on that bike is going to be *a process*, and not a financially viable one.
That’s a very low-end frame as evidenced by the stamped rear dropouts that are crimped to the frame, steel wheels, and it has drivetrain components front and rear that make the use of newer (and we’re talking 90’s-era when we say newer) parts complicated (not impossible).
Unless you’re absolutely dead set on using *this* bike as your fun project, I strongly suggest you buy a different used bike to start on. One with a modern bottom bracket shell, one with 130mm rear dropout spacing, one with a derailleur hanger, one that has cable routing for (even if you don’t want to use it) a front derailleur, one that uses 700c wheels.
You don’t show the brakes, headset, or handlebars, but your existing ones are also likely a compatibility PITA.
What I suggest will be less expensive than “upgrading” this one. And that’s just on part acquisition. We won’t even get into the tools.

That’s not really gonna work unless you have like several sheds full of bike parts, a welder and are a master mechanic

My sincere suggestion is that you find a different bike to upgrade.

Any to make this bike run better? Clean up that drivetrain. Do some new cables and brake pads. Easy work, cheap work, will make huge improvements.
