Me, my wife, and two of our best friends rode a modified, credit card version of the GMGG October 5th to the 9th. 210 Miles, 14,000 feet of elevation, 5 days.

Day 1: Mostly followed the GMGG route, Burlington to Stowe.

Day 2: Skipped the Northernmost bit and instead rode the LVRT, Morristown to Wolcott, then turned south and eventually descended Buffalo Mountain Road into Hardwick.

Day 3: Shortest day, Hardwick to Montpellier in the rain.

Day 4: The tough day, Lincoln Gap. We called an audible and stayed mostly on route 100 Montpellier to Warren to avoid as much climbing as possible in anticipation of Lincoln Gap. Everyone survived. Ended the day in Bristol, skipping the southernmost bits.

Day 5: Pretty much followed the route as published all the way back to Burlington.

Sorry for the ghost faces.

  1. Opinion on how this would do as a light bikepacking trip solo. Fun or too much?

Any issue with supply acquisition and camping spots? Can one camp near beer?

I have choice of a 650B gravel bike with (currently) 1:1 low gear (I’ve bikepacked with this before) with either fairly smooth Horizons (surprisingly capable) or rather grippy but slower on pavement and light gravel Maxxis knobbies. Or a Salsa Marrakesh 700C touring bike with actual measure 39 mm tires. I have room for larger on the Salsa, which is more comfy sort of (altish Koyote swept back bars with GC1 Ergon cork grips) with much lower gears. Opinion?

I’ve been over Lincoln Gap several times, not on a bike. It just looks moderately long and somewhat brutal. Any observation on that?
