Hi there, i have mounted this freehub body to a rear M732 XT hub and now the assembly is totally silent. Like you ear nothing when freewheeling except if i go like super close with my ear. Zero clics.

I mean, i was not expecting super loud crazy buzz, but zero noise, did I do something wrong?

Not that it’s not pleasing to freewheel in silence, but I find it odd to the point that i am questioning my re-assembly…

In the bag of the freehub body, there was a spacer, that i put between the hub flange and the body fh itself. That is the only spacer not shown on the shimano exploded view.

  1. My Novatec hub was super Silent too. Now After a couple hours of riding (and coasting) it is louder but stays „There“. Give it time 🙂

You could degrease and use oil to make it louder too. But that‘s just extra work IMHO.

  2. Yes Shimano do be like that.  Once the grease that’s packed into the pawls gets redistributed you’ll start hearing them slap.

  3. I just upgraded my rear wheel to Stan’s flow EX3/DT370 which comes with the 18 tooth Star LN ratchet, it’s also completely silent.

It’s because of the grease used. I have another wheel with a Shimano FH-M525 which is also really quiet but did get a little louder after riding for a while causing the grease to thin and spread out a bit.

At any rate, as long as the freehub is engaging correctly and spins smoothly and freely, you’re good to go. It’s normal, the grease is damping the clicks as the pawls slide over the ratchet. Loud freehubs are usually a combination of a lot of engagement points + really thin lube or oil instead of a thicker grease.

  4. Yeah, the hubs on my Shimano wheels are nearly silent. Kind of a nice change from the DT Swiss and i9 hubs on my other bikes.

  5. I have a contemporaneous Shimano 105 hub that also runs silently. Absolutely love it. Would that modern hubs be so quiet.

  6. I think you can get specific “silent clutch” hubs that don’t eventually pawl it up but these are also super nice. NOT a fan of loud cassettes

  7. Some want the noise to show they bought something expensive. When I was child the used playing cards sticking between the spokes to make the noise.

  8. Probably pretty normal. My Shimano Deore hubs are nearly silent too.

I’m not sure there’s supposed to be a spacer between the hub and the freehub though.
