I am confused why they bothered to put it there. The spacing is for the water bottle cage – 75 mm. But placing a water bottle cage with a bottle there looks liike an insecure fit, impossible to reach and it will collect dirt as well. What is this for? I know tool bags that fit into a bottle cage exist, but the same applies to them. Also, can I fit anything but a water bottle cage to these mount types? Couldn't find a reasonable bag, they all come with velcros.

It’s for a bottle cage. You can get bottles with mudcaps and if you’re going on a long tour then you can swap the bottles as they empty out.

I’ve also used it to put my tool storage bottle thing and some folding locks also come with mounts that it can be used for.

  2. You can put a third bottle there but it’s meant to be a spare, and you only access it when you are fully stopped, never while riding. Some bike bottles have caps that can fit over the drinking spout to keep dirt out. Other folks put fuel bottles there if they’re using liquid fuel camp stoves. Any leaks will not contaminate the rest of their gear than if the fuel bottles were stored in a bag.

  3. Bottle cage or a mini cargo cage.

I either put a tool bottle or a 3rd water bottle down there and use it to refill my other bottles when they’re empty.

  4. I mounted my mini pump holder there cause my experience with water bottles there is awful – max 0.5l and very dirty after offroad

  5. If you only ride shorter distances, this really seems pointless. But when you go on a longer bikepacking adventure, you can never have too many mounts. I actually wish my model had mounts right at this spot because it’s unused space…

  6. You can put another water bottle there. Or a storage pod in a bottle cage, which is what my buddy does.
