Dont hit the tree. People talk about line choice with your tires, but line choice with your body and bike and planning where it goes counts too. This just takes practice, and even experience riders such as myself will still do it occasionally.
If you do hit the tree, keep your hands on the bars and absorb the bike movement with your lower body. Really there are two things going on here: 1) you let a crash happen before it had to happen, and 2) your body position is a little compromised, which makes it harder to absorb hits and leads to stuff like your foot popping off when there is a sudden hit.
