More info about travel to Hydra: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/greece/hydra Only a 90-minute hydrofoil ride from bustling Athens, Hydra is the prettiest of the Greek isles. The community is an easy blend of workaday commerce, fancy yachts, and lazy tourists meandering through traffic-free streets, alongside the occasional donkey. #ricksteveseurope #greekislands #hydra

  1. What a beautiful isle, Hydra it is!
I was told Leonard Cohen wrote his song Suzanne or Marianne in Hydra.
I don't know whether it's correct or not.

  2. 3000 residents? I was there in Sept 2017 and asked a local what the population was and he said it was 25,000. Charmian Clift and her husband lived on Hydra for 8 years in the 50s. They bought a house in 1954 and in her book "Peel me a lotus" written in 1959 Charmian stated that the population back then was 3000, and that many of the houses were empty. So one would think that there are more than 3000 residents, but Wikipedia records less than 2000 residents. So who knows?

  3. I was there in May of 2016…my 10th time to the Greek islands and second time on Hydra. It's the kind of place made for those who can do some walking.  The day hikes are an escape from the world… If you want to experience Greece with no cars or motorbikes to drive you crazy… GO THERE AS SOON AS YOU CAN!!  ((And for more than 1 day!)).

  4. And people are called Greeks because they share in our education rather than in our birth.
Isocrates (ancient Greek rhetorician; from Panegyricus 50 )

  5. I was there in 1979, on honeymoon, glad to see it hasn't changed much. We visited three islands and Hydra was one of the Islands on a two week vacation. We went for a day trip to Hydra liked it, and then decided to go back for another few days. While sitting on some ancient steps being photographed. I knew instantly that I had lived in the Greek Islands previously, in a past life, and had sat on those ancient steps.

  6. The "restaurant" turning out to be some friendly gray-haired guy's kitchen is the most Greek experience possible, and I mean that in a good way.

  7. GOD BLESS THE FAITHFUL BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE AND THE BEAUTY OF GREECE FOR THEIR FAITH IN GOD HOSPITALITY FRIENDLINESS AND JOYFUL LIFE SHARING IT WITH OTHERS WHOM ARE WELCOMED

  8. I was there with a group in 1998 as a 16-year old teenager. Spetses, Hydra etc on a 1-week boat trip organized by a youth travel organization. Fond memories.
