My in-laws bought this new around 2004 for my brother-in-law. I’ve been riding it stock since about 2008.
Started getting into wrenching this summer, cleaned up the drive train and put on a new chain. Swapped the standard flat bars for a Surly Corner Bar and have been testing it out.
Next on the docket: true the wheels, replace the cabling, and add some bar tape. Been a fun project so far, looking forward to taking this thing on some gravel soon.

doesnt this defeat the purpose of the corner bar? ie. to have multiple habd positions that can reach the controls

Yes. Get that bar tape on there. Looks uncomfortable with bare bar to grab onto.
