Carefully prying, rotating, pushing and pulling and these links are just seized between the cassette and the rim/hub/spokes where it all comes together

So I guess I need a special wrench?

I really was trying to get this done with zero dollars but unless there’s a trick of the trade I’m missing to relieve some pressure on either the spokes or the cassette, I guess now it’s either bike shop or tool.

Which would be more cost effective? I don’t get paid till Friday when I go back to work and really was trying to get some good rides in this week. Super bummed out.

  1. It looks like the wheel is out of the frame? Can you create more slack by removing the chain from the chainrings?

The easy fix is remove the cassette, that requires a cassette tool and a chainwhip.

There is a way to remove the chain, but it requires a mix of finesse, puzzle solving ability, and brute strength, while also hoping not to bend the chain/twist a link.

  2. Not sure but this may be a freewheel not a cassette. Make sure to get the right tool. Also a great time to install a spoke protector. Bike snobs hate them but they do exactly what you need, keeping the chain from going back there and getting jammed. Also once you fix this, adjust your rear derailleur and pay special attention to the low limiter screw and make sure your hanger is aligned correctly. You can google all that and there are plenty of videos out there to help you.

  3. You can get a whole bunch of decent quality bike tools at cheap prices on Ali-Express, or Amazon (Toopre, ZTTO, Icetoolz etc) if you don’t want to wait for delivery (a lot of the same stuff historically, just marked up). Then remove the cassette, that will avoid doing any more damage to the spokes.

  4. Tie it to aa shed after and pull on the bike. It will work. Sometimes I just stick a stick under the chan and stand over the bar and lift up hard. But if it’s stuff you need to anchor it to something and unstuck it with force. Of that doesn’t work just undo the chaining you just need a whip and cassette tool specific to your cassette. Probably get both for 20 bucks

  5. Do you have a bike co-op in your area. There are free (or cheap) shops that you do the work but rent the stand. Most major cities have one.

  6. This is why I remove my dork disk only if it’s noisy or otherwise messed up. Also, I have more than one bike and it’s time consuming to maintain them all, and as I’m nowhere near perfect, I like the insurance of having a dork disk.

Having said all that, you may need to remove the cassette to get that out. Maybe flexing the spokes a little might work, but probably safest just to pull the cassette.

This is the sort of thing a shop might just do for free. It takes two seconds to crack the cassette loose and pop the chain out. If they want to charge you, just buy the $10 tool.

This happened to me on the trail… immediate pedal lockup while going 20mph. I stopped and yanked on it like it owed me money. Then I continued on down the trail.

Everyone downvoting this dude for being honest and saying that he can’t afford the tools and just wants to fix a frustrating problem is why this sub fucking sucks now.

Good luck OP, sorry people are being Reddit all stars to you.
